Cars Road Trip is a different kind of attraction. No rollercoaster, no adrenaline rush and no gripping the seat. Instead, you take a leisurely drive through the American south-west, accompanied by Cruz Ramirez and Sally Carrera. They guide you through the different sections of the route in Disney Adventure World and point out details that would be easy to miss on your own. That sounds more relaxed than Crush’s Coaster, and it is. But that does not mean you should underestimate the ride.
Cars Road Trip has highlights of its own. At the start, the world’s largest wheel nut immediately catches the eye. It is oversized, impossible to miss and an obvious photo opportunity. The route then continues into Carstrophy Canyon, where Copper, the enormous water tanker, is caught in an earthquake. What follows is one of the ride’s most unexpected moments. It is brief but effective, and exactly the sort of surprise you have come to expect and appreciate from Disney. Finally, Mater’s masterpiece awaits: a sculpture built from scrap metal whose crooked construction looks vaguely familiar. We will not reveal exactly what it resembles. One hint: Paris is not far away.
The trucks used for the road trip each pull several carriages, so it is worth choosing your seat carefully if you get the chance. The rear carriage usually gives you a better overall view of the scenes along the route. There is something to see on both sides, although most of the action takes place on the left-hand side. A seat in one of the middle carriages puts you right in the thick of the action, at least in Carstrophy Canyon.
Part of the route is based on the former Studio Tram Tour, one of the park’s original attractions. Anyone who remembers that ride will recognise a few familiar elements along the way. This provides a pleasant moment of recognition for those who have known and loved Disneyland Paris for many years.
Cars Road Trip is the perfect break between two more intense attractions. It is also one of the best places in the park for fans of Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen and his friends.
