Gravestones of Marry Murphy and Frank Ballard at Boot Hill by Phantom Manor

Boot Hill

An often overlooked spot in Frontierland with lots of details and references – Boot Hill, the cemetery of Thunder Mesa.

Boot Hill, a place of historical significance located directly behind the exit of Phantom Manor, is a solemn reminder of Thunder Mesa's past. In the small towns of the Wild West, cemeteries were called Boot Hill. So you are standing in the Ravenswood family cemetery. After the Ravenswood family left the town, the other residents of Thunder Mesa also used Boot Hill as a burial ground.

The Ravenswood family
The cemetery's eye-catching feature is a large grave. This is obviously the grave of Melanie Ravenswood, the bride who waited in vain for her groom. When all is quiet and you listen carefully, you may feel a little uneasy, because even after all these years, you can still hear the bride's heart beating. The Disney Imagineers were inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story 'The Tell-Tale Heart, among other things.
Nearby, you will find the very simple grave of her parents, Martha and Henry Ravenswood.
In this central area of Boot Hill, which is also the oldest part of the cemetery, you will also find the graves of two servants of the Ravenswood family: Jasper Jones and Anna Jones.
It's worth taking a closer look at the gravestone inscriptions, as the Imagineers have put a lot of imagination into them. Jasper Jones' gravestone inscription reads "Kept the Master Happy," and Anna Jones' reads "Kept the Master Happier".

Residents of Thunder Mesa
In the outer area of the cemetery, you will find various gravestones dedicated to residents of Thunder Mesa or criminals who terrorised this little town. It is worth paying attention to the details here, which often make you smile. Outside the fence, you will see four gravestones, one for a bear and three for its victims: a squirrel, a tomcat and a lumberjack, all three of whom passed away on 13 November 1865, albeit on different occasions at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bear, known for its insatiable appetite, met its end twenty years later and was honoured with a gravestone right next to its victims. Take your time and explore this little spot. You're sure to discover many things that will make you smile.

Hidden secrets of Disneyland Paris

A gravestone bearing the inscription 'In Memory, The Hole in the Wallet Gang' 1992' refers to Jesse James' gang, which was known as the 'Hole in the Wallet Gang'. Below this, arranged in two columns, are numerous names that do not refer to members of Jesse James' gang but to some of the Disney Imagineers who were instrumental in designing Frontierland.
Among them is Jeff Burke. This name will, of course, ring a bell with die-hard Disney fans. Jeff Burke was the driving force behind the design of the Phantom Manor attraction at Disneyland Paris. From the very beginning, he had a clear vision of what the attraction should look like and what story it should tell.
