As soon as you have taken your seat in the Studio Theater, it quickly becomes clear that no classic stage production is waiting for you here. The stage is generously laid out and uses several levels, plus moving elements and projections, to bring the various Pixar worlds to life. Set, light and movement work together in a way that keeps changing over the course of the show.
The close link between music and scene is central. The live band accompanies the action throughout and makes sure the individual sections are connected not just visually but in sound as well. Familiar melodies are reworked here and combined with specially composed pieces, which produces a dynamic of its own, noticeably different from other shows in the park.
The transitions between the worlds are handled fluidly and return again and again to the story around Charlie. Dancers, singers and performers let the scenes develop organically rather than as separate, disconnected sections. What emerges is an overall picture that works visually and emotionally.
Compared with the action-heavy attractions, the emphasis here is not on thrills but on the shared experience. The show works particularly well as a quiet break during the day, and at the same time it offers a high-quality staging that appeals to children and adults alike. The live music in particular gives Together – A Pixar Musical Adventure an effect that clearly differs from many other offerings in the park.
Characters from films such as Toy Story, Monsters, Inc. or Coco are firmly built into the staging and give the stage a high recognition value.
